Rudiger Clears His Name
After the others toured the sewers:
Rudiger slipped into the entrance of the Blazing Hearth and settled in beside Diebold before the larger man even realized he was there. He asked how Luther was doing. Diebold questioned where he'd been and Rudiger merely replied that he'd had business to take care of, but that he had heard there'd been some trouble.
After confirming that Luther would recover, Rudiger looked around for this Greentree that was supposed to have something for him. Before he could find the proprietor, his eyes spotted Krebs entering the room.
Rudiger told Diebold that if he needed him he should find a man named Heinrich at the Drowned Rat, and that he'd know how to find him. Then he left again, sneaking out the back before Krebs could recognize him.
Hopefully, Heinrich would get this whole mess sorted out soon enough, but until then it was best to not let any of the watch get a good look at him. Whatever the halfling had for him would just have to wait. Rudiger wasn't about to tell Diebold about what he'd really been up to. The commission for the first burglary had been enough to get things moving with getting his name cleared, but like with everything else it hadn't gone as smoothly as he'd hoped.
When you ended up on a watch list you didn't end up on just one list. Every watch house had a copy of that list. If his name was taken off all but one, then questions would come up when someone noticed the discrepancy, and he could end up in even more trouble.
His name needed to come off all the lists, and one of the clerks wasn't open to bribes. That meant that Rudiger had to break into the clerk's house and remove the keys to his work lockbox, get them copied by an associate of Heinrich's and then return the orginals to the clerk before he woke up.
It turned out to be a close run thing with the sun coming up just as Rudiger made his way back out. Now they just had to get the copies they made into the hands of a clerk or watchman more willing to take bribes.
A half hour after leaving the Blazing Hearth, Rudiger slid into the seat next to Heinrich at the Drowned Rat and inquired as to how things were going. The news was good for a change. All the proper parties had been found and now it was only a matter of waiting for the right clerk to come on duty before Rudiger's name was removed from the last of the lists.
One more day and he could return to his normal low level of paranoia instead of the full blown version he'd been living in for the past couple of weeks.
Heinrich asked him if there was anything else he could use, and Rudiger reminded him about that main gauche he'd mentioned before. He couldn't exactly carry around a shield with him on the job, and he wanted something more than just a dagger for his off hand after facing those beastmen.
Heinrich said he was still keeping an eye out for one, but that everything he'd come across so far hadn't been worth the price. One other thing that Rudiger told him would be useful would be a grappling hook. If he'd had one on the last job he wouldn't have had to cut it quite so close. Heinrich told him that should be easier to find than the main gauche.
Rudiger thanked him for his efforts and left, returning to his hideout for what would hopefully be the last time in a long time.
Rudiger lay on his cot thinking about what to do next. It might not be a bad idea to hang out with his travelling companions at the Blazing Hearth once his name was off that last list. They seemed to have made a good impression with the powers that be, and it wouldn't hurt to try to absorb some of that by association. He might be free of the law for now, but it wouldn't hurt to have the reputation of an upstanding citizen in case things went bad in the future.
Besides, they seemed to have Ranald's favor based on some of the luck they'd been having, and that was a good enough reason for Rudiger. If they got nosy as to what he'd been up to, he figured he could just tell them the truth, that he was from Middenheim and that he had left to find out who among the people he had known here had survived the siege.
